10 Most Stolen Vehicles in the United States
The National Insurance Crime Bureau released their 鈥淗ot Wheels” report in which they report on the most stolen vehicles each year in the U.S. The report notes the model year, model and make of the most stolen cars, ranking from highest to lowest in terms of the number of said cars being stolen. Note that the report is only able to report on cars as reported stolen by law enforcement.
The Honda Accord is the Most Stolen Vehicle
Yet again, the Honda Accord tops the list as the most frequently stolen vehicle in the U.S., with over 58,000 of them stolen in 2012. In 2nd place on the NICB list of most stolen vehicles is the Honda Civic at over 47,000 reported thefts. At 3rd place is the full-size Ford truck at about 27,000. As you can see, there is a wide disparity in terms of theft numbers from 2nd to 3rd place. The 2 top Honda models continue to be hot targets for criminals.
The 1990 model year of the Honda Accord has the highest theft count at over 8,000 vs. newer Honda's, which can be attributed to much tighter theft deterrent systems on newer cars.
Below is a List of the Top 10 Stolen Vehicles in 2012
1. Honda Accord (58,596)
2. Honda Civic (47,037)
3. Ford Truck – full size (26,770)
4. Chevrolet Truck – full size (23,745)

Although these numbers are alarming, there has been a steady decrease in the number of stolen vehicles of over 50% since 1991. This can be largely attributed to fewer older model vehicles on the road and marked improvements in the theft deterrent systems of newer model cars.
A Few Tips to Ensure Your Older Car Won鈥檛 Be on This List

鈥\xA2 Invest in a theft deterrent system that has modern capabilities
鈥\xA2 Do your best to park your vehicle in a garage or other protected space
鈥\xA2 If you don鈥檛 currently have comprehensive coverage, consider it today as this is what will pay for your car in the event it is stolen
鈥\xA2 And, be sure to keep records of everything you may do to your car (rims, stereo, etc.鈥\xA6) as without them, your insurance company won鈥檛 be able to factor them into the replacement value of your car
Though we certainly hope your car never falls victim to theft, by doing a little research and making some small investments in both theft deterrent systems and comprehensive coverage, you will certainly mitigate the chances of your car being stolen and, if it is, you will also be covered.
